Born in 1982, Antoine Desailly is a graduate from ENSBA (Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris).
His work is based primarily on repetition. Through painting, music, installation and drawing he tries to bring the mundane into the bizarre, the ordinary into the extraordinary. The daily life exaggerated to saturation gives these simple subjects a different value, where the complexity of our world rubs in the absurd and in the poetic.

I Heart Soviet Art

I took this picture with me to Budapest in '89 and all the people there reacted with a bemused disdain. Of course, they'd had this stuff shoved up their butts since they were kids but to me it suggested a certain resolute beauty and a singularity of purpose; something exotic to be coveted by a middle-class American like me.

Beuys Piano 1988

Yes, it's a grand piano covered in felt. Joseph Beuys is one of my all-time favorites so when I spotted this at Pompidou in '88, I took a shot. I guess in France they let you take pictures in museums. Love those French and thank you Lynn Stadum.

Berlin War Memorial Composite 1988/2012

Wow! I was just about to write, "...and here I am, twenty-four years ago, shooting Berlin's famous Brandenburg Gate, the then-division between East and West replete with Soviet guards and a most foreboding statue." but then I thought about it and then looked it up and this isn't Brandenburg at all! It's some other war memorial, I guess, that was also by the wall. Ted or Sven, you're going to have to help me out with this one.

The Berlin Wall 1988

It was an appropriately overcast April day when Ted and I visited the area. At the time this wall seemed so absolute. Crazy to think it would only last another year or so. The shot just below is the famous Checkpoint Charlie.
