Twelve Designs from Early Monday Morning

2009

... and I'm actually presenting them in the order in which they appeared.
I say, "appeared," because when these unplanned 'art-fits' come on,
things happen very quickly.
So quickly, in fact, that once I stop and look at what I've done,
I feel almost as though the work has happened without my knowledge
and that I am seeing the results for the first time...
that it's all happened without my participation.

Isn't that odd?

... and I say, "odd," because this is sort of the first time it's occurred to me to give this phenomenon much thought,
though I guess it does happen pretty often.

It's definitely a desirable sensation.
It's like getting free stuff.
Everyone loves getting free stuff.

But, hey, that's not to say - AT ALL - that the work is always good.
Just because something is instinctual or unconscious doesn't automatically make it some sort of a work of preternatural genius.
No, all I'm saying is that it happens
and that, for June the 8th, 2009,
these are the results.

... and that I hereby coin the term, "Creative Blackout."

Trey's Posters

My pal, Trey, whom I've known for, (I just counted) like, thirty-two years
is in this groovy surf band in Phoenix (where surf-culture is king!), The Surfside IV
and he makes these posters for them which I think are just totally excellent.

Check it out.
I think Trey is a great, great designer, though getting him to admit to that is...
it just ain't ever gonna happen.
But look at the evidence, man!

I understand he's a pretty great guitar player now, too.

Kill 'em, Trey!
You rule!

Sam Stang Glass Patterns

(2003)

Back in '02 or '03,
when I would sometimes volunteer down at the Mad Art Gallery,
there was this show that would come through once or twice a year,
which was the big Sam Stang Glass Sale.

I don't know,
I don't think I ever met Sam himself,
but what I know is he's this guy who's got this groovy glass studio in one of the towns near St. Louis,
and he and his people just crank out all this really beautiful stuff:
plates and bowls and jars and vases and goblets and what-have-you...
in all these really crazy colors and patterns
and he'd show up with hundreds of these things to places like Mad Art
and people would come from miles around to get their mitts on them.
For real: lined up around the block at 8:30 am to spend hundreds on this glass.
Such is the allure of shiny things, I guess.

So business for Sam was, for sure, brisk but I was fortunate enough to get a few shots of the stripes and swirls before the glass consumers of St. Louis took 'em all home.

Cheap Laugh

Watch out.
This might make you laugh in spite of your highbrow good taste and very expensive education.

Do you think maybe the fart was too much, though?
I don't know.

Thanks, CNW, for sending this my way.

Periodic Table of Typefaces

This is too damn cool not to steal & repost.

I stole it from here.
