Beth Gibbons Sings "Sour Times" with Portishead in 1994

"Sour Times" is a song by English trip hop group Portishead, released as their second single in August 1994. Written by all three members of the band, "Sour Times" features on Portishead's debut album Dummy (1994).
The original 1994 release initially reached only number 57 in the UK, but after the success of "Glory Box" in 1995, it was re-released and peaked at number 13 on the UK singles chart in April. It is also the band's only song to date to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, at number 53.

To pretend no one can find
The fallacies of morning rose
Forbidden fruit, hidden eyes
Courtesies that I despise in me
Take a ride, take a shot now

'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

Covered by the blind belief
That fantasies of sinful screens
Bear the facts, assume the dye
End the vows, no need to lie, enjoy
Take a ride, take a shot now

'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

Who am I, what and why?
'Cause all I have left is my memories of yesterday
Oh these sour times

'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

After time the bitter taste
Of innocence, decent or race
Scattered seeds, buried lives
Mysteries of our disguise revolve
Circumstance will decide ....

'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

'Cause nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you
Nobody loves.. me
It's true
Not, like, you.. do

Flying
I'm flying
Hitting heavens high
I'm head on brake too low

Floating
I'm floating
Hanging below the sea
I'm telling you look at me

Ecstasy
I'm in ec...ecstasy

Singing
I'm singing. Yah!
Sounding hanging breathe
I'm begging you look at me

Ecstasy
I'm in ec....ecstasy
Ecstasy

Sally, you opened out your arms to all those young men
And girl you had room for every one of them
You're the only girl on Barry and Third
Sure as hell you're the only one who cared

So put your hands together for Sally
She saved all those young men
Put your hands together for Sally
She's the one who cared for them

She's doing our dirty work
She's the only one who cares
Doing our dirty work
Thirsty world, one angry day in New York

Take a look at Dave he was once seventeen
Zoot suit and shinny shoes, he ran around town
And threw his metholated laughter
Most of his memories drowned

But he remembers what his mommy used to shout
She used to shout, one day surely son
The streets are gonna tire you out

So put your hands together for Sally
She's the one who cared for him
Put your hands together for Sally
She was there when his luck was running thin

She's doing our dirty work
She's the only one who cares
Doing our dirty work
Thirsty world, one angry day in New York

Tommy had a wife and family
But the needle came between the love and the hard times
Thank God for Sally, she was there through the misery
Just a place to lay his head, just about better off than dead

She's doing our dirty work
She's the only one who cares
Doing our dirty work
Thirsty world, one angry day

Vince came up from the country
Couldn't even find himself a room
Thinking about his babies
That's further away than the moon

With no money but his pride in his pocket
There's really no way he can go home
There's a picture of his woman in his locket
Most of all he doesn't want to be alone

Put your hands together for Sally
She's the one who cared for him
Put your hands together for Sally
She was there when his luck was running thin

She's doing our dirty work
She's the only one who cares
Doing our dirty work
Thirsty world, one angry day in New York

"Each And Every One" Sung by Tracey Thorn with Everything But The Girl in 1984

Everything but the Girl (often shortened EBTG) was a British musical duo, formed in Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, and singer Ben Watt. The duo's most successful single was a Todd Terry remix of "Missing" charting in several countries in 1994.

If you ever feel the time
To drop me a loving line
Maybe you should just think twice
I don't wait around on your advice

You tell me I can go this far oh, but no more
Try to show me heaven and then slam the door
You offer shelter at a price much too dear
And your kind of love's the kind that soon disappears

So don't brag how you have changed
And everything's been rearranged
I thought all that was over and done
But I still get the same from each and everyone

Being kind is just a way to keep me under your thumb
And I can cry because that's something we've always done
You tell me I'm free of the past now and all those lies
Then offer me the same thing in a different guise

You tell me I can go this far oh, but no more
Try to show me heaven and then slam the door
You offer shelter at a price much too dear
And your kind of love's the kind that soon disappears
