Le Poisson d'Avril

The second morning I woke in Paris it was April the First. Ted and I, that afternoon, went over to Pompidou to check out the good modern art they have there but, in the plaza outside the museum, there were some sort of festivities going on. After looking on a spell, somewhat confused, Ted noticed I had a paper fish taped to my butt. Evidently the French have some sort of an April Fool's tradition that involves children sticking fish to passersby unawares. Bizarre, yes, and beyond that I cannot tell you more but here is the fish Ted found on my ass, preserved all these years (since 4/1/88).

Crank It

1999

This mechanical surface fragment was shot with all the pictures of the metal tanks in St. Charles. This wheel controls something. Not sure what.

Iron Composition (Positive & Negative)

2000

Out behind Forest Park Community College, there is an iron scrapyard adjacent to a manufacturing facility there (in St. Louis). I snuck in there several times, taking pictures and grabbing the little bits of junk I could manage to carry with me (a lot of which turned into some nice gallery pieces). That's where this image, among many more, was taken.

Tanks

1999

I don't remember too much about these except to say that I saw something I thought was interesting off the side of the highway in St. Charles, MO and I pulled over and shot some pictures of it.

Containment

2001

Driving on the 64/40 in St. Louis you'll see these giant, round, iron structures just on the South side of the highway. I wondered for years what they were and it wasn't until well after shooting these that I learned that they are basically great bladders for storing natural gas.

Fragments from the Back of a Store

2006

Here's me on a bike ride up Kingshiway in St. Louis and stopping at a vacant store, looking for good photographs with the old OM-1, and going around back and shooting anything on the back of the building that wasn't just white-painted cinderblock.

The Hollywood Sign

1997

Y'ever seen a movie with the Hollywood sign in it? One where characters are near it? Seems like they never get it to look quite right (which is so dumb, if you think about it.) You wanna know what the Hollywood sign looks like close up? It looks like this.

Back when I lived with Alicia in Santa Monica, she and I and Ed and Maggie took a hike up that mountain they got with the sign on it. I brought my camera.

Night Factory

2000

I'm pretty sure this is the steel mill in Granite City, Illinois. This was another of those instances where I just had to pull over and get some shots and was then run off for my trouble. That happens kind of a lot.

East Side at Night

2001

I think what a lot of us did was, when the bars closed, we went across the river to E. St. Louis in Illinois where clubs stayed open until, like, five in the morning (shocking all the drunk driving that went on and probably still does). On one such foray I was drunk and confused and walked out of a club alone and was not allowed back in. So, stranded by myself in the parking lot, I started taking pictures of whatever was there. Most all of them were useless, but this one has a pretty nice mood to it.

Here are some of the people I was with that night: Rosa, Mary, Lance and someone else I can't make out.

Construction No.1 (Perforated Walls and Struts)

2000

You're driving along. You notice something interesting. You know it won't be there forever so you pull over and grab it with the camera. This is an example of that. I saw fresh walls go up on Oakland where the Checker Dome used to sit and down the road from my school, so I stopped and got what I could of this nascent structure before they ran me off.
