Military Design

I love it.
Have since I was a youngster, actually.
I wonder why.
Symmetry, strength, graphic dynamism, simplicity...
there's a lot to be said for it, I guess.
It's neat, for the most part.
I don't know about the dragon, though,
and that one with the flaming sword and the rainbow?
I'd imagine there's probably a lotta, 'don't ask, don't tell,' happening in that particular unit or battalion or whatever.

Stock Adoptions

(2009)

Last week, Belford left me with a disc of vintage stock photos that I've been dying to get into.
Yesterday I finally took a peek inside and decided to begin messing with some of them,
with no real objective in mind but with an abbreviated and fairly loose set of guidelines, such as,
1. slight sepia toning on the grayscale images,
2. a uniform use of the color red (clearly my Barbara Kruger influence),
3. the continued use of the X motif, a recent favorite and always pregnant with meaning,
4, text elements must be imperitave phrases and always in the Didot font which I think plays nicely with the vintage innocence of the stock images, etc...

I may do more as an excercize, but here's what I came up with last night...

L.A. Punk Rock: Yay!

Don't ask me why I'm so into this shit.
It's not like I was there or anything.
Just seems cool to me.
I found these pictures over at the Dangerhouse page.

Ave Discordia!

This makes me smile.

My pal Ed, back when we both lived in Berkeley, introduced me to the Principia Discordia,
which is this sort of Bible that these wacky fuckers who call themselves Discordians (or Erisians) made up,
a sort of guidelines for the worship of Eris/Discordia who is, it happens, the Goddess of Chaos.

I think it's just for fun and not really to be taken seriously.
Last I remember, religion and anarchy don't mix so well.
Still, if you absolutely have to have a religion...

I was interested in it mostly for its recognition of the whole 23 enigma,
which I was real into back then.

I'd love to look at the thing now.
I think it might be totally hilarious
and I could probably use some churchin' up.

So, then...

Adaptability is more necessary now than ever.

Age and wisdom have nothing to do with each other.

A life of moral dissolution is often your best bet for survival.

All majorities are corrupt.

All relationships are doomed.

All saints are psychotic.

All your stories are the same story.

Ambition is a plague.

Art is for educated people only.

Art is more precious than life.

Artists should be allowed maximum ego.

Beautiful people are the most mistrustful.

Beauty should be harvested.

Belief is arbitrary.

Biological urges are not impossible to avoid.

Boredom is the strongest life force.

Capitalism is a lottery.

Censorship makes life more difficult.

Certainty is too expensive.

Conflict creates happiness.

Contentment is death.

Contradiction is natural.

Convenience is a killer.

Conventional wisdom should always be revised.

Cruelty can be life affirming.

Cruelty is hereditary.

Culture accelerates with technology.

Death is sometimes your best alternative.

Denial is an ineffective means of survival.

Destiny and fate are poor excuses.

Emotions cannot be trusted.

Entropy will have its way with you.

Equality is for suckers.

Even the very wealthy are bought and sold.

Even your best ideas are contrived.

Even your best intentions are evil.

Everybody lies.

Everyone is addicted.

Everyone is capable of criminal activity.

Everyone is physically challenged.

Everyone is withholding information.

Everything is mostly space.

Exceptional people are the unlucky ones.

Fear of consequence prevents you from acting on your desires.

Friendship is as important as food.

Happiness is chemical.

Happy people are the most vulnerable targets.

Hardening yourself against suffering is soul-destroying but impossible to avoid.

Human obsolescence comes more quickly nowadays.

Indifference should not be mistaken for charisma.

Indifferent people have all the power.

It is better not to know what you are talking about.

It’s easy to forget what you really want.

It’s healthy to want to rebel against everything.

It’s natural to want to reject reality.

It’s useless to argue.

It’s wise to be suspicious of people who are nice.

Laws are made to place blame.

Lazy people are the most misunderstood.

Legality discourages trust.

Liberty is a danger.

Love comes more easily to the less particular.

Love is a good way to control people.

Love is easy to dismiss if you know how.

Lovers are the most easily disappointed people.

Masturbation is big business.

Masturbation is healthier than sex.

Men and women are compatible.

Morality is not an end.

Most people are addicted to euphemism.

Most people have no idea what they are doing.

Nothing is decided by committee.

No amount of work will save you from blame.

No one can diagnose your problems accurately.

No philosophy is complete.

Optimists are easy to trick.

Other people know more about you than you know about yourself.

Other people will operate as your conscience if you let them.

People are more similar than different.

People are not alone enough.

People are true believers in artifice.

Perception is subjective.

Politicians have got to be kidding.

Real sadness only comes from inside.

Religion is a behavior control industry.

Religious people lack perspective.

Repetition can bring comfort.

Repressing your desires is the right thing to do.

Reproduction is your first priority.

Smart people know to embrace disorder.

Social responsibility begins with cynicism.

Strangers are often the most trustworthy people.

Success promotes suspicion.

Suffering allows for beauty.

Tenderness comes more easily to fragile people.

The best governments are the ones that ignore you.

The biological impulse is nothing to be ashamed of.

There are no innocent bystanders in the eyes of the law.

There is wisdom in fear.

Total apathy is a big responsibility.

Trust is laughable.

Very few people are good at their jobs.

Very few things will always be.

Wealth and beauty earn you the privilege of being stupid.

Wealth is nothing to envy.

We are all time travelers.

We are destroyed by our bodies.

We humor those around us until we go mad.

We need a less productive world.

You are at your best when your unconscious.

You are closer to nature than you suspect.

You are crippled by your desire.

You are the victim of lies if you believe what you say.

You can blame all your problems on your brain.

You can count on your fondest wishes being ignored.

You can forget about paradise.

You never consider the consequences of success.

Your crime is that you believe you are innocent.

Your emotions will embarrass you sooner or later.

You’re stupid if you don’t fight your emotional impulses.

Your faith and erudition won’t keep you from being an animal.

Your leaders are impotent without you.

Your opinions make you stupid.

Your strongest compulsions are the ones to ignore.

Your worst fears are confirmed when you get what you want.

You wouldn’t stand a chance if you didn’t sell out.

A Photostat of Jane March

(1997)

Does anyone remember how beautiful Jane March was in The Lover?
A film of the Marguerite Duras story it was, and narrated by Jeanne Moreau even, I think.
Jean-Jacques Annaud was the director of it who described, "the din of the heat," so well for this.
I wish I had more to say about it.
I dont.

But this guy sure does.

A Word from Our Sponsor

Generally, everything you’ll see here at PROOF is made especially for you by yours only,
but just now I was over at the grain edit feed and found these great, vintage ads from The Dharma Initiative.

So I’m posting them.

These go out to Drew Johnson
who was getting pretty into the LOST series the last time I saw him.
Now, a year or so later, it’s in regular syndication
so I put it on from time to time and let me tell you, Mr. Johnson,
that shit don’t make a bit o’ sense!
I should probably be watching the episodes in order and all that, but still...
Huh?

Anyhow, the designer responsible for these is one Adam Campbell who, as you see, spares nothing for the sake of authenticity.

Oh, and don’t forget to run by Sawyer’s nickname generator!

Jerome Levin

Jerome is an old friend from art school.
We made a lotta stuff together.
He is one of a very few artists with whom I can collaborate.
He sent me this stuff a while ago.
I forget when.
Obviously, he is being extra French here.
Cool handwriting, though, right?

Well,
Jerome eventually married a pretty girl,
moved to New York,
made some pretty children
and is currently living the dream.

Fucker.

Miss You, Kirsty

(1997)

Kirsty MacColl is just a singer and songwriter I've always loved.
Sadly, she's not alive anymore.
She was swimming in Cuban waters and got run over by a speedboat or something is what I heard.
A stupid shame, for sure.
Now she sings for the Choir Invisible (metaphorically) and they never sounded better!

Here's a photocopy I made of her in, like, 1997 or thereabouts.

If you wanna check out some Kirsty, there's a 'best of' album you can download by clicking this.

And there's more to be learnt here, too.

Added: Heres an accurate account of Kirsty's tragic/heroic passing (from Wikipedia)...

MacColl had a busy, successful year in 2000, with the success of Tropical Brainstorm, as well as her participation in the presentation of a radio programme she had done for the BBC on Cuba. MacColl decided to take a much needed holiday, and she, her partner, musician James Knight and her sons travelled to Cozumel, Mexico. She intended to introduce her sons during the trip to an activity she loved – scuba diving. On 18 December 2000, she and her sons went diving in Cozumel, in a specific diving area that watercraft were restricted from entering. With the group was a local veteran divemaster, Iván Díaz. As the group was surfacing from a dive, a speeding powerboat entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons. Louis was not in the boat's path, but Jamie was. She was able to push him out of the way (he sustained minor head and rib injuries) but in doing so, she was hit by the boat and killed instantly. MacColl's remains were repatriated to the United Kingdom and the subsequent funeral took place at Mortlake Crematorium in London.

The boat involved in the accident was owned by Mexican supermarket millionaire Guillermo González Nova, who was on board with several members of his family. An employee of González Nova's, boathand José Cen Yam, claimed to have been driving the boat at the time that the accident occurred. Several published reports have included accounts from eyewitnesses that have stated Cen Yam was not at the controls; eyewitnesses also indicate that the boat was travelling much faster than the speed of one knot that Nova had claimed. Cen Yam was found guilty of culpable homicide and was sentenced to 2 years 10 months in prison. However, he was allowed under Mexican law to pay a punitive fine of 1034 pesos (about £61 or US$90) in lieu of the prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay approximately US $2150 in restitution to MacColl's family, an amount based on his wages. Published reports have included statements from people who spoke to Cen Yam after the accident, claiming Cen Yam had received money for taking the blame for the incident.

The View From The Ninth Floor

(2000/2009)

Here are some views of Washington Avenue and surrounding area in downtown St. Louis from around the turn of the century.
Huh.
I'm just now noticing that the term 'turn of the century' doesn't mean what it used to and that its use here is even further confused by my application of that same distressing filter which I just cannot seem to get enough of.
It, furthermore, doesn't much help that everything I'm shooting here is, in fact, about a hundred years old.

I suppose I could tell you the story of the ninth floor but it's not really all that interesting and I've already taken up enough of your valuable time.

Excuse me, won't you?
