Palimpsest

is just a word I keep forgetting to remember.

palimpsest

noun

• a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.

• (figurative) something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form : "Sutton Place is a palimpsest of the taste of successive owners."

Hey C you might think about signing up for the "word of the day" e-mail at dictionary.com. A lot of the words are pretty quotidian, but every once in a while they really help you find the mot just, like yegg, xanthous or stormy petrel. I have a big folder full of saved words I still haven't had a chance to use. But one of these days I will, and just you wait. It'll be pretty sesquipidalian, I can assure you.
